The Internal Revenue Service is planning to rescind Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, per a report from CNN.

President Trump had previously asked the IRS to take away Harvard’s tax-exempt status for refusing to condemn antisemitism on campus.

He has already pulled billions of dollars in funding from the institution.

CNN broke the news:

The Internal Revenue Service is making plans to rescind the tax-exempt status of Harvard University, according to two sources familiar with the matter, which would be an extraordinary step of retaliation as the Trump administration seeks to turn up pressure on the university that has defied its demands to change its hiring and other practices.

A final decision on rescinding the university’s tax exemption is expected soon, the sources said.

The administration already has blocked more than $2 billion in funding from the nation’s oldest university, which is fighting the White House’s policy demands, citing the constitutional right of private universities to determine their own teaching practices.

President Donald Trump in recent days raised the idea of punishing the Ivy League university for not complying with what the administration has sought to portray as a campaign to fight antisemitism.

“Perhaps Harvard should lose its Tax Exempt Status and be Taxed as a Political Entity if it keeps pushing political, ideological, and terrorist inspired/supporting ‘Sickness?’ Remember, Tax Exempt Status is totally contingent on acting in the PUBLIC INTEREST!” Trump posted on Truth Social on Tuesday.

The Trump administration has asked the Internal Revenue Service’s top attorney to revoke Harvard University’s tax-exempt status, according to three people familiar with the situation, amid President Donald Trump’s row with the institution over its handling of antisemitism and diversity practices.

The directive is a significant escalation of the president’s feud with Ivy League institutions and other nonprofit groups his administration views as “woke,” according to the people, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the topic.

Tax-exempt status is available to charitable, religious and educational organizations, as well as social welfare groups. But the organizations must adhere to tax laws that prohibit them from engaging in certain political activity. There is no proof that Harvard has violated any of those guardrails, experts say.

The IRS is supposed to administer the tax rules impartially, not pursue political vendettas against exempt organizations,” said Steve Rosenthal, who served as senior fellow at the Tax Policy Center, a Washington-based think tank.

“Any forthcoming actions by the IRS will be conducted independently of the president, and investigations into any institution’s violations of its tax status were initiated prior to the president’s TRUTH,” White House spokesperson Harrison Fields said in a statement.

This is great news.

It means your tax dollars will no longer go to funding a woke academic institution responsible for filling young adults’ minds with anti-American propaganda.
