Body of woman, 80, is found in freezer as 60-year-old man appears in court charged with preventing lawful burial

A man was today accused of keeping the body of an 80-year-old woman in his freezer at a house in a Welsh seaside town. 

Christopher Phillips, 60, appeared in court charged with preventing a lawful burial after the frozen dead body was found. 

Police received a call after concerns were raised about the welfare of the woman. 

Officers then found her body in a freezer in the seaside town of Porthcawl, prompting them to arrest and charge Phillips. 

Phillips appeared at Cardiff Magistrates Court charged with preventing a lawful and decent burial.

He also faces a charge of fraud by false representation. 

During a short hearing, Mr Phillips spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth, and address.

He was remanded in custody, and will next appear in Cardiff Crown Court on 20 March.

Forensic police officers remain at the scene as investigations continue.  

A spokesman for South Wales Police said: 'South Wales Police attended an address on Poplar Crescent, Porthcawl at 1:45pm on Tuesday, February 17 after a call concerning the welfare of a woman.

'A woman in her 80s from Porthcawl was found dead within the property.

'Christopher Phillips, 60, from Porthcawl has been charged with preventing a lawful burial. 

'Investigations into the death are on-going.'
