Former Democrat Mayor Indicted By Grand Jury, Accused Of S*xually Assaulting Child He Met Online

A former mayor and political candidate in New Jersey has been indicted by a grand jury for allegedly sexually assaulting a child he met online.

The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office announced on Friday that former Dumont Mayor Andrew LaBruno, 44, was indicted on multiple charges.

LaBruno was arrested last year after being accused of drugging and sexually assaulting the child.

News12 New Jersey shared further:

The Bergen County Prosecutors Office says Andrew LaBruno contacted a minor online and made arrangements to meet.

The sexual assault later took place at the victim’s home in Englewood, according to authorities.

In addition to his role as mayor, authorities say he served as police sergeant in Jersey City. He also ran for a seat in the state assembly.

LaBruno was indicted on charges of official misconduct, aggravated sexual assault, sexual assault, and endangering the welfare of a child.

The official misconduct charge was added after investigators determined he identified himself as a police officer to prevent his own apprehension.

An affidavit filed in support of the charges stated that LaBruno went to the child’s Englewood home when his parents were not there and “sprayed an unknown substance into his hand.” This caused the victim to become dizzy and incapacitated, before the assault occurred.

Investigators were alerted to the assault via a 911 call from a member of the public. They found the victim in a state of “cognitive impairment,” the affidavit stated.

Detectives seized two electronic devices and discovered physical evidence both at the scene and during a search of LaBruno, according to the document.

He was arrested in November and pleaded not guilty to all the charges initially filed against him.

LaBruno has been a cop since Dec. 1, 2005, and currently earns an annual salary of more than $120,000.

A spokeswoman for the Jersey City Police Department previously told NJ. com that LaBruno was suspended without pay immediately following his arrest.

LaBruno is a married father of two who formerly served as the mayor of Dumont in Bergen County from 2020 to 2023 after serving as a borough councilman for two years prior to his election.

He ran unsuccessfully for state Assembly on the Democratic ticket last year in the 39th legislative district.
