Air Canada-Operated Boeing Airplane Experiences ‘Engine Issue’ After Takeoff, Nearly 400 Passengers

An Air Canada flight from Toronto to Paris returned to Pearson Airport Wednesday evening after the aircraft experienced an 'engine issue' shortly after takeoff.

The Boeing 777-200LR was performing flight AC872 and carried 389 passengers.

“After the aircraft landed, it was inspected by airport response vehicles as per normal operating processes, and it taxied to the gate on its own,” the airline said in a statement, according to CTV News Toronto.

“The aircraft will be taken out of service for further evaluation by our maintenance and engineering professionals,” the statement added.

“Video captures moment Air Canada 777 had a compressor stall on departure from Toronto Pearson International Airport on Wednesday. AC872 returned safely 30 minutes later,” Breaking Aviation News & Videos wrote.

Global News reports:

The Greater Toronto Airport Authority said the plane was met by Toronto Pearson’s fire department after landing safely.

Video obtained by Global News shows what appears to be the aircraft landing showing an orange flashing glow.

Air Canada said the aircraft will be taken out of service for evaluation by maintenance staff and engineers.

Passengers were then put on another aircraft, the airline said. The flight was then rescheduled for a 1:32 a.m. departure on Thursday.

This is the second time in about two weeks Air Canada had a plane leave Pearson airport and return shortly after takeoff due to engine issues. A flight from Toronto to Delhi on May 27 also had an engine issue and had to return to Pearson airport.

CTV News Toronto noted:

“Passengers will be accommodated on another aircraft departing Toronto later tonight,” the airline added.

A spokesperson for the airport confirmed to CP24 that the plane landed safely and was met by the fire department.

According to flight tracking service FlightAware, the plane left the gate at 8:46 p.m. and landed at Pearson Airport at 9:50 p.m.
