The U.S. Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has recalled two imported chicken products over concerns they may cause illness.

“Al-Safa US LLC, the importer of record located in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, has recalled approximately 2,010 pounds of imported frozen ready-to-eat chicken products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes,” Food Safety News reports.

The items were shipped to retail locations nationwide.

The frozen ready-to-eat chicken products were produced in Canada on June 5, 2024, and imported to the U.S. on June 13, 2024, and June 21, 2024. The following products are subject to recall:

12.1-oz. cardboard box package containing “Al Safa Halal Charcoal Grilled Chicken Seekh Kebab Grilled, Minced, Chicken Patty Kebab” with “NOV 30 25” and “0605404” printed on a sticker on the outside of the package.

14.11-oz. cardboard box package containing “Al Safa Halal Fully Cooked Chicken Chapli Kebab Seasoned Chicken Patty” with “NOV 30 25” and “0605416” printed on a sticker on the outside of the package.

The products subject to recall bear establishment number “866” inside the Canadian mark of inspection.

Per Newsweek:

The issue was discovered after routine testing conducted by the FSIS. There have so far been no reports of illness related to consuming the chicken. Anyone who has purchased the product is advised to either throw it away or return it to the place of purchase.

Newsweek has contacted Al-Safa US LLC for comment via the contact form on its website outside of regular working hours.

Listeria can contaminate food and drink products and cause food poisoning. An infection often leads to a range of unpleasant symptoms, and can sometimes result in serious illness.

Signs of a Listeria infection include high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. According to the FSIS, symptoms can begin up to two months after eating a product that has been contaminated.

Sometimes an invasive Listeria infection can spread beyond the gastrointestinal tract. In more vulnerable individuals, such as the very young, elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, infections can be much more serious. In pregnant women, Listeria infections have been linked with miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn.

However, most healthy people not in these groups are likely to make a full recovery.
