Baby Powder Recalled, Possibly Contaminated With Cancer-Causing Mineral

Dynarex Corporation has expanded a recall of baby powder due to possible contamination with asbestos.

The recall was initiated on September 19, 2024.

“Dynarex Corporation is expanding the recall initiated on September 19, 2024External Link Disclaimer, to include an additional 373 cases of item number 4875, Dynacare Baby Powder, 14 oz., as well as 647 cases of item number 4874, Dynacare Baby Powder, 4 oz., because they have the potential to be contaminated with asbestos,” the FDA wrote.

“Asbestos is a naturally occurring mineral that is often found near talc, an ingredient in many cosmetic products. Asbestos, however, is a known carcinogen and its health risks are well-documented. If talc mining sites are not carefully chosen or if proper steps are not taken to adequately purify the talc ore, it may contain asbestos,” it continued.

“The product was sent to distributors on or after January 18, 2024, by direct delivery in the following states: AL, AR, AZ, CA, CO, DE, FL, GA, IA, IL, IN, KY, LA, MA, MD, MN, MO, MS, MT, NC, NE, NJ, NM, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, TN, TX, UT, VA, VT, WA, WI and sold online on Amazon (Amazon.com),” the FDA noted.

Fox Business reports:

The initial recall included 62 cases of Dynacare Baby Powder, Batch Number B 051, item 4875. The FDA now says that the recalled products are from batches B 048–B 060.

Batch numbers are located on the bottom of bottles and each case.

The products were sent to distributors on or after Jan. 18 in 35 states and sold online on Amazon.

Finished products containing asbestos were identified during a “routine sampling program by the FDA,” causing the company to stop distribution of the product, launch an investigation into the cause of the contamination and initiate a recall.

Per CBS News:

Manufactured from Oct. 31, 2023 through Feb. 1, 2024, the recalled powder’s expiration dates run from Oct. 30, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027, according to the firm’s notice.

The company has stopped distributing the product and is investigating what caused the contamination.
