BREAKING: Iran Launches Missile Attack On U.S. Military Base

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS ALERT!

Iran launched missile strikes on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar following the air strikes against its nuclear facilities over the weekend.

According to CNBC, Iran’s armed forces called it a “powerful and destructive missile strike on the United States’ Al-Udeid military base in Qatar.”

Fox News reported that a source said explosions were heard in Doha.

Fox News reports:

The base is home to 10,000 American forces and is the U.S.’s largest military installation in the Middle East. Located southwest of Doha, it serves as a hub for logistical operations for the U.S. mission to fight ISIS in Iraq and Syria. It also hosts Central Command’s (CENTCOM) Forward Headquarters, as well as its air forces and special operations in the region. It also has been used as a headquarters for British involvement in airstrikes against ISIS in Iraq.

President Donald Trump visited Al Udeid last month on May 15, where he inked a $1 billion military sales agreement with Doha.

Qatar has walked a tight line between friendly relations with the U.S., through efforts to expand the base, and with Iran. Prior to the attack, Qatar suspended all flights and promised to “take all necessary preventive measures.”

The attack was not entirely unexpected – satellite images showed the U.S. moved most of its unhangered aircraft out of Al Udeid last week.

Iran vowed to retaliate against the U.S. after American B-2 bombers dropped 14 bunker buster bombs on three Iranian nuclear sites.

There are currently no reports of casualties.

WATCH:

The New York Times claimed that Iran gave Qatari officials an advanced notice of the attack to minimize casualties, saying Iran needed to symbolically strike back against the United States.

Qatar closed its airspace before Iran launched the attack.

DEVELOPING: Qatar Temporarily Closes Airspace Amid ‘Imminent Threat’ Warning

"Multiple missiles have been seen in the skies above Qatar following Iran’s launch of 6 missiles aimed at U.S. bases," Mario Nawfal said.

"Embassies had already ordered shelter-in-place amid credible strike warnings. This marks the first direct missile threat over Qatari airspace in the current escalation," he added.

From the Associated Press:

Iran said its missile attack on Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar matched the number of bombs dropped by the United States on Iranian nuclear sites this weekend, signaling Iran’s likely desire to deescalate.

Iran made the announcement Monday night in a statement from its Supreme National Security Council after the attack, which Qatar said caused no injuries.

Iran also said it targeted the base because it was outside of populated areas.
