BREAKING: Train Derailment Prompts Evacuation Order, Possible ‘Hazmat Situation’


A train derailment in Matteson, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, has prompted evacuations due to a hazmat situation.

According to ABC 7 Chicago, officials were investigating a leaking train car.

Multiple cars derailed from the Canadian National Railway (CNP) train near the 21000 block of Main Street at approximately 10:45 a.m.

It wasn’t immediately clear what substance was leaking from the train car.

The village spokesman said a white powdery substance seen leaking from one car was tested by CN, who said it is not hazardous.

Residents within 1 mile south of Main Street and 217th Street, 1 mile west of Main Street and a quarter mile east of Main Street will need to evacuate as a precaution.

The mandatory evacuation order also includes residents living on Main Street from the tracks south to Sauk Trail and residents living on 218th Street, 218th Place and Charles Street.

The village spokesman said residents should “plan for a long-term evacuation” and “take any medication and supplies” they may need.

A CN spokesman said crews were responding to the incident. He said about 10 cars carrying “various substances” derailed.

“Train cars are reportedly leaking chemicals, and hazmat has been called in All residents within a one mile radius have been told to bring necessary supplies for a LONG TERM EVACUATION Please don’t let this be another East Palestine, Ohio,” journalist Nick Sortor wrote.

Evacuations are underway after a freight train derailed in Matteson, Illinois on Thursday morning, as crews work to determine if hazardous materials have leaked from the train.

According to Matteson police, 20 railcars of a Canadian National train derailed around 10:30 a.m.

The Village of Matteson confirmed nearby residents are under a mandatory evacuation order.

“Multiple cranes have arrived at the scene of a trail derailment in Matteson. Canadian National is the company and they said 10 railcars carrying ‘various substances’ derailed. A temporary evacuation order for nearby residents was lifted around 1:30PM,” WGN TV News reporter Angelica Sanchez said.

“Hazardous materials have been air-lifted from the site. Richton Park residents are no longer affected by the train derailment, however The Village of Matteson residents within a couple blocks of 217th & Main St are still under an evacuation order,” a Facebook post from the Village of Richton Park read.

“Metra Electric inbound and outbound trains from Chicago to University Park will only operate from Chicago to Olympia Fields and back until further notice due to the derailment,” it added.
