Cartel Attacks Drug Rehab Clinic, Resulting In 9 Dead

Nine people were killed, and four others were injured after a Mexican drug cartel attacked a drug rehabilitation clinic in northwestern Mexico.

The attack occurred at the “Shaddai” rehabilitation center in the city of Culiacan.

Governor Rubén Rocha Moya stated the cartel gunmen asked patients if they belonged to a criminal group, and when no one answered, the gunmen opened fire.

Additionally, on Monday, armed gunmen abducted Guillermo Rodríguez Gaxiola, the president of the Union of Rehab Center Networks in Sinaloa.

Per Barron’s:

Gunmen shot up a drug rehab clinic in Mexico’s troubled Sinaloa state Monday, killing nine people and injuring several more in the seventh such attack in months, the local government said.

Officials believe cartels are targeting addiction treatment centers to forcibly recruit patients, who are executed if they resist.

The latest attack occurred at dawn in the state capital Culiacan, gripped by a wave of violence as rival factions of the notorious Sinaloa cartel fight for supremacy.

Gunmen broke down the doors of the clinic and opened fire inside, killing eight people on the spot and wounding six — one of whom died hours later, a government report said.

It was the seventh such attack since September, according to an AFP count.

So far this year, cartel-related violence in Sinaloa has left at least 750 people dead and 900 missing, according to official figures.

The Sinaloa cartel was founded in the 1980s by drug kingpin Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman and Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who was arrested in Texas in July and is awaiting trial in New York on charges of drug trafficking, money laundering and conspiracy to commit murder.

Per BNO:

The attack took place around 1:45 a.m. at the “Shaddai” rehabilitacion center in the city of Culiacan, in the state of Sinaloa. According to Governor Rubén Rocha Moya, gunmen forced their way into the building, asked the patients if they belonged to a criminal group, and then opened fire when no one responded. Eight people were killed at the scene, and a ninth victim died at the hospital.

Additionally on Monday, Guillermo Rodríguez Gaxiola, president of the Union of Rehab Center Networks in Sinaloa, was abducted from his home in Culiacan, according to local media Noroeste. Armed men reportedly stormed the residence shortly after the rehabilitation center attack, forcibly taking Rodríguez and stealing valuables before fleeing the scene. His whereabouts remain unknown.

The violence continued on Monday afternoon when armed groups stormed two more rehabilitation centers, freeing nearly 270 patients, Noroeste reported.
