Democrat Governor Endorses Kamala Harris For President

California Gov. Gavin Newsom gave his endorsement to Kamala Harris for president.

“Tough. Fearless. Tenacious. With our democracy at stake and our future on the line, no one is better to prosecute the case against Donald Trump’s dark vision and guide our country in a healthier direction than America’s Vice President, @KamalaHarris,” Newsom said Sunday.

Harris officially announced she is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination in November’s election.

“On behalf of the American people, I thank Joe Biden for his extraordinary leadership as President of the United States and for his decades of service to our country. I am honored to have the President’s endorsement and my intention is to earn and win this nomination,” Harris said.

KTLA 5 reports:

The pair worked tightly beginning about two decades ago. In 2003, they were both elected to prominent positions in San Francisco — Harris as District Attorney and Newsom as Mayor.

They both served those positions until 2011, when they both took positions at the state level. Newsom then served as Lt. Governor and Harris as Attorney General. Harris was later a Senator during the first two years of Newsom’s stint as Governor.

Now, Newsom is offering his endorsement to Harris, who began her campaign for the Presidency on Sunday.

Newsom himself was considered a potential pick for the White House when speculation began that Biden could step down after his disastrous debate performance late last month. The California Governor shot down questions regarding his interest in the job, and now his endorsement of Harris likely puts that speculation to rest.

Newsom’s term as Governor expires in early 2027.

Harris also received an endorsement from Hillary Clinton on Sunday.

Hillary Clinton Endorses Kamala Harris

From The Hill:

Harris, who previously represented California in the U.S. Senate, is seen as the party favorite to replace President Biden at the top of the ticket — following Biden’s historic announcement on Sunday that he would no longer seek the party’s nomination at the convention next month.

Some Democrats have expressed interest in an open convention — a competitive race between numerous candidates trying to win the support of the party delegates. Many others, however, have thrown their support immediately behind Harris, seen as heir apparent as the vice president on the ticket.

Biden has endorsed Harris’s bid, while former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) have stopped short of doing so.

Newsom has been one of Biden’s top supporters and surrogates on the campaign trail. He has repeatedly said he would not run for president if Biden were to leave the race. He first said in 2022 that he would not run for president in 2024.
