New Jersey Democrat Rep. LaMonica McIver made her first court appearance today after the DOJ hit her with federal charges for assaulting ICE agents.

She appeared virtually from D.C. as the judge ordered her to surrender her firearms and informed her that she is not allowed to travel outside the United States — at the very least until her preliminary hearing on June 11th.

If convicted, Rep. McIver could face years in prison and a $250,000 fine.

The New York Post reported:

Appearing via video screen, McIver, 38, was read her rights before being released on her own recognizance.

She faces up to eight years in prison if convicted.

Until her preliminary hearing — set for June 11 — McIver is not allowed to travel outside of the country unless it’s required for official work purposes, and she must notify the government before doing so.

McIver, who has represented New Jersey’s 10th Congressional District since last September, slammed the charges as “purely political” and blamed the ICE agents at the scene for escalating the confrontation.

“It was very unnecessary,” she told CNN Tuesday, calling the charges “absurd” as she insisted she was “there to do my job.”

“If I’m going to be charged with a crime for doing my job, it really speaks to where we’re headed in this country.”

The Department of Justice brought the charges against McIver, claiming she assaulted a federal law enforcement officer during a clash at Delaney Hall, an ICE detention facility in Newark.

“That conduct cannot be overlooked by the chief federal law enforcement official in the State of New Jersey,” Interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey Alina Habba said when she announced the charges Monday. “I have persistently made efforts to address these issues without bringing criminal charges and have given Representative McIver every opportunity to come to a resolution, but she has unfortunately declined.”

McIver has said the charges against her “are purely political – they mischaracterize and distort my actions, and are meant to criminalize and deter legislative oversight.”

Meanwhile, Rep. Nancy Mace announced that Republicans have filed a resolution to expel McIver from Congress:
