Democrats Flip State Senate Seat In “Heavily Republican District”

In a major upset, Democrats flipped a Pennsylvania state Senate seat in a heavily Republican district.

Democrat James Malone defeated Republican Josh Parsons in Tuesday night’s special election.

The shocking victory comes in a district President Trump easily won in November.

“Democrats FLIPPED a State Senate seat in Lancaster County, PA,” Scott Presler said.

“This is a heavily Republican district. Democrats won early voting handily, while Republicans waited to vote on ONE day. Republicans lost by 482 votes. I hope they learn from this,” he continued.

The Hill reports:

Malone, the mayor of East Petersburg, is projected to defeat Republican Lancaster County Commissioner Josh Parsons to represent Senate District 36 for the remainder of former state Sen. Ryan Aument’s (R) term. Aument resigned from his office in December to become the state director for McCormick, who took office in January.

Parsons was considered likely to win in the conservative-leaning district, which President Trump carried in November with 57 percent of the vote and McCormick won with 56 percent. Aument had even been unopposed in his last election in 2022.

But Malone was able to overcome the odds, and the Democratic Party continued its strong performance in under-the-radar elections since Trump took office. Democrats notched another major upset in a strongly conservative Iowa state Senate district in January, also winning a county executive seat in New York, among other more low-key successes.

Democratic National Committee Chair Ken Martin celebrated Malone’s victory, calling it a “shockwave” to the system and the way Republicans have run the government.

“In a district that went to Trump by 15 in 2024 and has a 23-point Republican voter registration advantage, Malone’s victory is a loud and clear rebuke to Republicans’ threats to the programs Pennsylvania families rely on – from Social Security and Medicaid to our public schools,” Martin said.

“Republicans, we need to do better. Please take special elections seriously. If you want to defeat 3 Pennsylvania democrat Supreme Court Justices this November, I highly encourage you to request a mail-in ballot right now,” Presler said.

Per WGAL:

Malone said he’s very excited with the outcome.

With Parsons having more name recognition, Malone said he felt like his campaign was underestimated, but he’s happy all the work put in has paid off.

“One of the biggest things we did was go from the ground, reach out to everybody and let them know what we were running, why we’re running. And I think that made all the difference,” he said.

It will be the first time a Democrat has held the seat in decades.

Malone talked about why he thinks the party was able to flip it.

“The everyday voters are not liking what they’re seeing in the federal level. They don’t like the chaos. We want to be sure that we, as Pennsylvania, are standing up for our neighbors and are standing up for our state. Brotherly love is Pennsylvania. And that just proved out through today – kindness over criticism. That’s what we’re trying to do. I think that really is what we’re looking at moving forward,” he said.
