Fire In GOP Congressman’s Office Prompts Emergency Response

A fire caused by a space heater in Rep. Andy Biggs’ (R-AZ) office prompted an emergency response at the Cannon House Office Building.

“Just after 9:40am DCFD responded to Cannon House Office Building for the report of a space heater on fire. Companies found a small space heater in the hall extinguished with dry chem prior to arrival, with no extension. Companies ventilating dissipating smoke,” the DC Fire and EMS Department wrote.

“Earlier this morning, a space heater caught fire under one of my staffer’s desks. Fortunately, no one was harmed. Thanks to the quick thinking of my staff and interns in the office, the flames were quickly extinguished and emergency personnel promptly arrived on scene,” Biggs said.

DC News Now reports:

The fire department said companies found the small space heater in the hall. The fire was extinguished before crews arrived.

As a result of the fire, the building was ventilated for smoke.

The Cannon Building, completed in 1908, is the oldest congressional office building in the United States Congress and is an example of the Beaux Arts style of architecture.

Currently, the Cannon Renewal Project is underway and involves a renovation of the building’s accessibility and structural issues. The project is expected to be completed in 2025.

Per News From The States:

U.S. House lawmakers and committees are housed throughout three office buildings just outside the Capitol in Washington, D.C.

The Cannon office building, which hosts Biggs’ office, sits in a row with the Longworth and Rayburn buildings.

Lawmakers are typically assigned to their personal offices based on seniority and a lottery system, which incoming House members participated in on Thursday morning.
