Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was hospitalized Friday after experiencing severe abdominal pain.

He’s reportedly now in stable condition.

“I remain hospitalized at Hospital Rio Grande, in Natal, after feeling severe abdominal pain during my schedule in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte,” Bolsonaro said in an X post.

“The cause was a complication in the small intestine, a consequence of the multiple surgeries I had to undergo after the attack I suffered in 2018,” he added.

– I remain hospitalized at Hospital Rio Grande, in Natal, after feeling severe abdominal pain during my schedule in the interior of Rio Grande do Norte.

– The cause was a complication in the small intestine, a consequence of the multiple surgeries I had to undergo after the attack I suffered in 2018.

– Thank God, my condition is stable and I am continuing to recover, without fever and with good clinical progress. The latest information we have is that, for now, there is no need for new surgery.

– I would like to sincerely thank the doctors and nurses at the hospitals in Santa Cruz and Natal, who treated me quickly, with dedication and competence, as well as the efficient transport provided by the Military Police/RN.

– At first, I was promptly welcomed at the Aluízio Bezerra Municipal Hospital, in Santa Cruz, and then transferred to the Rio Grande Hospital, in Natal, where I remain hospitalized.

– I also thank all Brazilians for their prayers, messages and displays of affection.

– Moments like these remind us of the fragility of the flesh and the strength that comes from faith, family and those who remain by our side, even from a distance.

– With the help of the doctors and God’s protection, I will soon be back, ready to resume my mission of traveling through the five regions of Brazil.

During the day, Bolsonaro underwent scans to determine whether an intestinal obstruction would require surgery. His doctor Antonio Macedo told Reuters that, if surgery were needed, Bolsonaro could be transferred to Sao Paulo, where he had received procedures related to a stabbing attack ahead of the 2018 election.

In his post, the former president said that he hopes to soon feel better to continue traveling around the country.

Bolsonaro, a hard-right former army captain who served as president from 2019 to 2022, has been campaigning around Brazil for Congress to pass an amnesty bill for his supporters who stormed the capital Brasilia after he lost the 2022 election.

Brazil’s Supreme Court decided last month to put Bolsonaro on trial for allegedly conspiring to overthrow the government after that electoral loss. He has denied any wrongdoing and called the trial an example of left-wing “lawfare” targeting conservative leaders like himself and France’s Marine Le Pen.

Bolsonaro has already been banned from running for office until 2030 for discrediting the country’s voting system. If the Supreme Court finds him guilty, he could face a long prison sentence.

The former Brazilian president has previously had abdominal surgery related to a stabbing attack ahead of the 2018 election.

The stabbing was nearly fatal, as he lost some 40% of his blood and had to have emergency surgery.

One of those subsequent procedures was the placement and later removal of a colostomy bag, which made him prone to intestinal disorders.

The hospitalization comes as Bolsonaro, who was president from 2019 to 2022, was beginning a political campaign trip across Brazil’s northeast.

He has been calling for his supporters who stormed the capital Brasilia after he lost the 2022 election to be pardoned.

Brazil’s Supreme Court ruled that the former army captain will have to stand trial, accused of trying to overthrow the government after that electoral loss.
