Upon exiting his role at the Department of Government Efficiency, billionaire Elon Musk’s relationship with President Donald Trump quickly began to sour.
The origin of their feud appeared to be Musk’s opposition to a major tax cut-and-spending bill being pushed by the White House.
But when a prominent Democratic lawmaker signaled that the issue was a rare opportunity to find common ground with the Tesla CEO, he quickly responded with a sarcastic take.
According to Fox News:
Sen. Adam Schiff, D-Calif., wrote on X that “I can’t believe I’m saying this – but [Elon Musk] is right.” However, that seems to be the last point on which the two agree. They both object to the Big Beautiful Bill, viewing it as full of pork. Musk opposes the bill because he believes it raises government spending too much, while Schiff objects to what he calls its “far-right” content, which he describes as “dangerous.”
Musk fired off a response rejecting Schiff’s alleged praise of the tech billionaire’s position on the bill.
“Hmm, few things could convince me to reconsider my position more than Adam Schiff agreeing with me!”
On May 30, Musk’s time with the administration came to an end, and he seemed to leave things on good terms. President Donald Trump thanked Musk for his work with the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) and gave him a symbolic “key to the White House” as a parting gift.
Following his departure from the White House, Musk said he was looking forward “to continuing to be a friend and adviser to the president.” However, things took a sharp turn as a feud between Trump and Musk quickly heated up after the Tesla founder began publicly criticizing the Big Beautiful Bill.
Musk’s social media commentary about the proposed legislation has sparked an array of reactions in recent days:
Here’s a transcript of commentator Stephen Crowder’s full post above:
Elon Musk has built some phenomenal companies, and he’s an inarguably brilliant man.
But Elon’s meltdown over Donald Trump and his Big Beautiful Bill isn’t a bolt out of the blue moment.
Elon has consistently looked out for Elon, even when it came at the expense of American interests.
– He raged at conservatives who questioned his stance on H-1B visas and told them to f*ck themselves and declared war on them because they didn’t want American tech workers to be replaced with cheap labor from India.
– He gave into Brazil’s demands, including blocking accounts critical of the government, so that X could be reinstated in the country.
– Elon has parroted Chinese Communist Party points for years, cozied up to the CCP for preferential treatment, and even opened up a Tesla showroom in Xinjiang.
– Walked away from first Trump admin when Trump pulled us out of the Paris Climate Accord, and objectively terrible deal for the American economy.
Nobody would have held it against Elon long term if he was just upset about the bill. But his willingness to completely throw the President under the bus because he felt offended is going to be hard to get past.
And here are a few more reactions:
I like Elon, but I elected Trump. I’ll wait for direction from him.

Here’s the latest response from House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), per the Associated Press:
“I didn’t go out to craft a piece of legislation to please the richest man in the world,” Johnson said on ABC’s “This Week.” “What we’re trying to do is help hardworking Americans who are trying to provide for their families and make ends meet,” Johnson insisted.
Johnson said he has exchanged text messages with Musk since the former chief of Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency came out against the GOP bill.
Musk called it an “abomination” that would add to U.S. debts and threaten economic stability. He urged voters to flood Capitol Hill with calls to vote against the measure, which is pending in the Senate after clearing the House. His criticism sparked an angry social media back-and-forth with Trump, who told reporters over the weekend that he has no desire to repair his relationship with Musk.
The speaker was dismissive of Musk’s threats to finance opponents — even Democrats — of Republican members who back Trump’s bill.
“We’ve got almost no calls to the offices, any Republican member of Congress,” Johnson said. “And I think that indicates that people are taking a wait and see attitude. Some who may be convinced by some of his arguments, but the rest understand: this is a very exciting piece of legislation.”
And here’s what he had to say in another recent interview:
