House Passes SAVE Act To Require Proof Of United States Citizenship To Vote In Federal Elections

The House of Representatives passed the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act to require documentary proof of U.S. citizenship to vote in federal elections.

The bill passed 221-198 and heads to the Senate.

Only five Democrats voted for the legislation.

“Today, 198 House Democrats voted against preventing illegal aliens from voting in American elections. Over the past four years, Joe Biden has welcomed millions upon millions of illegals into the country knowing that noncitizens only have to check a box to vote in a federal election,” House Speaker Mike Johnson said.

“We have long known this was an intentional effort to turn them into voters, and now the American people know where every member of Congress stands on this critically important issue. House Republicans believe that only Americans should vote in American elections. House Democrats have no proven they believe that illegal aliens should vote in American elections,” he added.

Fox News reports:

Five Democrats voted in favor of the measure, including Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas; Rep. Vicente Gonzalez, D-Texas; Rep. Jared Golden, D-Maine; Rep. Don Davis, D-N.C.; and Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Wash.

The bill now heads to the Senate, where it will face strong opposition from Democrats. President Biden has also said he will veto the measure.

The bill was introduced by Roy in May and former President Trump pushed the legislation in a high-profile press conference at Mar-a-Lago earlier this year.

Leading up to the July Fourth week-long recess, Johnson was circulating a memo within the House GOP conference, arguing why the bill is necessary.

“I dare [Democrats] to vote no against a bill that says that only citizens – AMERICAN CITIZENS – should vote in American elections,” Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) said.

“Thank you, President Trump, for supporting the SAVE Act. Americans, please find out where your members of Congress stand on this bill, which would prevent noncitizens from voting in federal elections,” Sen. Mike Lee (R-UT) wrote.

From The Hill:

The former president urged GOP lawmakers to approve the legislation in a Truth Social post on Tuesday, writing: “Republicans must pass the Save Act, or go home and cry yourself to sleep.”

Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas), who introduced the bill in May, said at the time, “Radical progressive Democrats know this and are using open border policies while also attacking election integrity laws to fundamentally remake America.”

Roy and Johnson have butted heads in the past, particularly over the Speaker’s bipartisan budget efforts, but the two former Judiciary Committee colleagues see eye to eye on immigration.

In an op-ed in May, Roy wrote that “radical progressive Democrats aren’t even trying to hide it anymore — they’re publicly admitting their intention to leverage open borders and the tens of millions of illegal aliens in the U.S. to fundamentally remake America by cementing one-party rule.”
