Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) reportedly is considering running for New York governor in 2026.
According to the New York Post, the Empire State hasn’t had a Republican governor since 2006.
The report follows President Trump’s withdrawal of Stefanik’s nomination to serve as United Nations ambassador to ensure Republicans maintain their House majority.

Per NBC News:
New York Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul is up for reelection in 2026.
The potential move comes after President Donald Trump withdrew Stefanik’s nomination to be U.S. ambassador to the United Nations and asked her to stay in Congress instead, where she has been given a new leadership arrangement.
Stefanik has $10 million cash on hand across her various political entities and has outrun Trump in her upstate New York district.
Rep. Mike Lawler, R-N.Y., is also considering a gubernatorial bid.
In a statement, New York State Democratic Party spokesperson Addison Dick called Stefanik a member of a “pathetic crew of Trump minions.”
“This latest bombshell polling proves what every New Yorker already knows: that we must FIRE Kathy Hochul in 2026 to SAVE NEW YORK,” Stefanik said.
“Hochul is the Worst Governor in America and it’s not even close. Her incompetence, corruption, and radical failed Far Left policies have destroyed our great state causing businesses and families to flee from crushing high taxes, out of control regulations, inept fiscal mismanagement, wide open border sanctuary city policies putting illegal first and NYers last, and an out of control crime crisis due to Democrats’ failed bail reform defund the police policies,” she added.

“New Yorkers’ opinions of Governor Kathy Hochul are, at best, lukewarm. Hochul’s approval rating is upside down; a majority of New Yorkers think she is not a good leader for the state, and nearly six in ten do not want Hochul to run for re-election next year. Perceptions of Hochul exist within a pessimistic atmosphere,” Marist Poll wrote.
“New Yorkers think the quality of life in New York is on a decline. Majorities perceive the state to be unaffordable and oppose congestion pricing. Plus, many voters say New York’s economy is deteriorating, and more than one in three expect their family finances to get worse in the coming year,” it added.
According to the polling, 39% of New Yorkers approve of the job Hochul is doing as governor and 46% disapprove.

From the New York Post:
“She is being advised and pushed to consider by allies of [Trump] and longtime friends,” one person with knowledge of the discussions told The Post.
“Elise has been approached by major donors, New York GOP leadership and Trumpworld to run for governor,” a second source close to the lawmaker added.
“Hochul has never been more unpopular.”
A third source said Stefanik is “the most popular Republican in the state and performs far better than Trump — if anyone could win it would be her.”
That source cautioned that Stefanik is “just looking” at the possibility and had no imminent deadline to decide.
