JUST IN: Donald Trump Officially Announces His Vice President

Donald Trump has announced Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) as his running mate in the 2024 presidential election.

“After lengthy deliberation and thought, and considering the tremendous talents of many others, I have decided that the person best suited to assume the position of Vice President of the United States is Senator J.D. Vance of the Great State of Ohio. J.D. honorably served our Country in the Marine Corps, graduated from Ohio State University in two years, Summa Cum Laude, and is a Yale Law School Graduate, where he was Editor of The Yale Law Journal, and President of the Yale Law Veterans Association,” Trump said on Truth Social.

“J.D.’s book, ‘Hillbilly Elegy,’ became a Major Best Seller and Movie, as it championed the hardworking men and women of our Country. J.D. has had a very successful business career in Technology and Finance, and now, during the Campaign, will be strongly focused on the people he fought so brilliantly for, the American Workers and Farmers in Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, Minnesota, and far beyond,” he added.

From the New York Post:

Former President Donald Trump has chosen freshman Ohio Sen. JD Vance to serve as his No. 2 in his bid to return to the White House, ending months of speculation about who he had chosen for his VP.

Trump world insiders had long said the 78-year-old would choose someone based on “loyalty” and someone who would compliment his strong personality, but not overshadow him, raise money and be ready to serve.

The decision comes on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, and comes two days after a gunman shot Trump in the upper ear at a Pennsylvania rally. The shooter, 20-year-old Thomas Crooks, nearly missed Trump’s head, and fatally shot one attendee in the crowd.

Trump had teased his VP pick over the course of his campaign, first claiming he had chosen his running mate — but refusing to disclose any details.

The mercurial ex-commander in chief praised a wide range of candidates throughout the months and kept several close allies close, keeping the final choice a mystery until the final moment.

Trump’s VP announcement comes on the first day of the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, Wisconsin.

Per CBS News:

Tens of thousands of Republicans, including more than 2,400 delegates, have descended on Milwaukee for the convention, with dozens of prominent lawmakers and officials set to address attendees over the course of the four-day affair.

Trump made his selection for vice president earlier in the day, and Vance will be introduced on the floor of the convention shortly after 4:30 p.m. ahead of a vote to formalize his selection. Vance, Tim Scott of South Carolina, Marco Rubio of Florida and former North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum were believed to be on Trump’s shortlist to get the nod, but the first-term senator from Ohio ultimately won out.

The convention comes just two days after Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt during a rally in Pennsylvania. Trump was struck by a bullet in the ear and one attendee died after being shot by the gunman, who was killed by Secret Service snipers.

The attack threatened to upend the proceedings in Milwaukee, but Trump quickly said he was determined to proceed and arrived in the city on Sunday evening. He is scheduled to address the convention on Thursday night.
