Few voices in the entertainment industry have been more consistently critical of President Donald Trump than Whoopi Goldberg and some of her fellow panelists on ABC’s “The View.”
But during a recent episode, she surprised those co-hosts by admitting that the president might actually be onto something.
According to the Daily Wire, her unexpected remark came during a discussion of the Trump administration’s efforts to eliminate the Department of Education:
“Maybe that is a good thing,” she said. “Because maybe it will force us to make sure that our kids actually get what they need. Maybe it will force us to go to our states and say, ‘Listen, I want to make sure since you’re taking all this money from my taxes, I want to make sure that my kids get exactly what they need.’”
“I don’t have to wait for the government to do it, we can do it!” she declared, effectively making the conservative argument for returning control of education to the states and local school boards. “This is now in our hands. This is in our hands, and it’s going to be tough and nobody wants to do it because it’s a b****, but you know what? If it comes down to your survival, this is what you gotta do, you gotta take care of what you gotta take care of.”
Her cohosts remained silent as Goldberg wrapped up her thought, then pivoted quickly to announce that producers were telling her it was time for a commercial break.
Public sentiment on the topic of shuttering the DOE is mixed, but many social media users have applauded the White House’s efforts to address serious issues within the federal agency:
If you work for the Department of Education and are posting about how angry you are about losing your job, just remember, 40% school age children can’t read.

K-12 Drive recently reported on the various proposals in the executive and legislative branches to scale back or repeal the department:
Already, the Trump administration has laid off half of the Education Department’s staff, canceled about $881 million in contracts for the agency’s nonpartisan research arm, frozen grants for teacher preparation programs, and reversed spending extensions for federal COVID-19 emergency funding approved under the Biden administration.
The moves are part of Trump’s plans to dramatically reduce the size of the federal government and, in terms of education, to bring more decision-making to the states and local communities.
Actually closing the Education Department, however, needs congressional approval. Specifically, passage requires a Senate supermajority of 60 votes.
One Senate bill, the Returning Education to Our States Act, outlines where each of the Education Department’s responsibilities would be transferred. The bill also proposes to convert federal education funding into block grants, which would give states more flexibility on how to spend the money, according to the bill’s sponsor, Sen. Mike Rounds, R-S.D.
