Mix-Up At Hospital Leads To Abortion Performed On The Wrong Pregnant Woman

A patient mix-up at a Prague hospital reportedly led to an abortion performed on the wrong pregnant woman.

According to the New York Post, multiple investigations are underway after Czech Republic doctors terminated the fetus of a woman who was four months pregnant.

The tragedy occurred on March 25th.

From the New York Post:

The victim had arrived at Bulovka University Hospital in Prague for what she thought would be a routine check-up, the outlet reported.

However, she was instead placed under anaesthesia intended for another patient and a curettage, or surgical cleaning of the uterus, was instead performed without her consent or knowledge, resulting in a miscarriage.

Nurses, doctors, a gynaecologist and an anesthesiologist failed to notice the error and the shocking snafu was blamed by medics on a “language barrier,” according to the report.

Both the woman who lost her baby and the woman who was supposed to be put under were of Asian descent, the paper reported, citing local media.

All the staff involved are reportedly suspended and under investigation by the hospital for gross negligence.

“Usually the curettage procedure is used to treat other gynaecological issues, but it can be used for abortion,” Independent stated.

Independent reports:

An investigation by the hospital has so far revealed the woman was addressed in the waiting room instead of the other patient, and she nodded in agreement and signed paperwork for the procedure.

Gynaecologist Jan Přáda, vice-chairman of the Czech Medical Chamber, told local media: “A Czech-speaking patient would probably actively resist the fact that she is going to undergo a procedure that she does not understand.”

Eva Libigerová, a spokesperson for Bulovka University Hospital, said: “We have expressed our deep regret and apologies to the patient and her entire family for this unfortunate incident and assured her that we will do everything possible to mitigate the harm caused and also compensate her.”

A source who did not wish to be identified told news outlet Prahain.cz that both women were of Asian descent and did not have a proficient level of Czech.

They said: “It is a procedure that is ugly, called a scraping. It is performed on women who bleed for a long time or have problems after childbirth and the like.
