Multiple Democrat Governors Endorse Kamala Harris, “I Am Fired Up”

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer said she was “fired up” to endorse Kamala Harris for president.

“Today, Governor Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the Democratic Party’s nominee for president,” a press release from the Gretchen Whitmer Fight Like H*** PAC read.

Whitmer gave her endorsement to Harris in unison with “fellow governors in midwestern states” – Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker, Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, and Wisconsin Gov. Tony Evers.

“Vice President Harris has my full support,” the press release read.

“Let’s win this,” Whitmer said.

The Hill reports:

Whitmer was viewed as one of Harris’s most viable rivals for the nomination before President Biden announced his decision Sunday not to seek a second term.

Another Democratic star, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D), said last week that he would not challenge Harris for the nomination if Biden dropped out of the race.

Both Whitmer and Newsom had communicated to Democratic leaders before Biden announced his decision that they would not be interested in serving as Harris’s running mate, according to a source familiar with internal party conversations.

“Today, not only am I fired up to endorse @KamalaHarris for President of the United States, I’m proud to serve as a co-chair of her campaign. In Vice President Harris, Michigan voters have a candidate they can count on to lower their costs, protect their freedoms, and build an economy that works for working people. Donald Trump is a convicted felon who stokes violence, overturned Roe, and drove our economy into the ground. We cannot let him anywhere near the White House. Vice President Harris, you have my full support. Let’s win this,” Whitmer said Monday.

When asked if she would be Harris’ running mate, Whitmer said she’s “not leaving Michigan.”

From The Detroit News:

Michigan Gov. Gretchen Whitmer endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris to be the next president of the United States on Monday and seemingly took herself out of potential consideration to be the Democrat’s running mate.

Asked Monday morning if she was interested in being vice president, Whitmer said: “I am not leaving Michigan. I am proud to be the governor of Michigan. I have been consistent. I know everyone is always suspicious and asking this question over and over again … I am not going anywhere.”

Whitmer announced her support for Harris a day after Democratic President Joe Biden revealed that he was dropping his reelection bid, 107 days before the general election on Nov. 5. Whitmer, whom many Democrats see as a potential future candidate for president, had been a co-chairwoman of Biden’s campaign and had repeatedly touted her belief in the 81-year-old Biden as others called for him to get out of the race.
