Navy Sailor Allegedly Attempted To Access Joe Biden’s Medical Records, Administratively Punished

The U.S. Navy said Tuesday that a junior sailor attempted to access Joe Biden’s restricted medical records multiple times.

“According to officials, a junior Navy sailor attempted to access President Biden’s medical records from a military database three times in February but failed. The sailor, whose name remains undisclosed, faced administrative discipline following an investigation that concluded in late April. The sailor, part of the Navy’s hospital corps based at Fort Belvoir, Virginia, accessed the Genesis Medical Health System on February 23 but did not retrieve President Biden’s records,” Rawsalerts wrote.

“President Biden was informed of the attempted access shortly after White House staff were notified by the Defense Department. The sailor never reached the president’s medical records and couldn’t have accessed the information because it is restricted. The junior Navy sailor has since been disciplined,” the post added.

“On February 26, 2024, Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command (NMRTC) Fort Belvoir was notified of an unauthorized access to medical records by an active-duty service member,” the U.S. Navy said in a statement, according to ABC News.

“A Sailor assigned to NMRTC Fort Belvoir searched the name ‘Joseph Biden’ in MHS Genesis, the Military Health System’s electronic health record, out of curiosity. A co-worker reported the Sailor’s breach of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA),” it added.

It’s unknown what records the sailor may have pulled up but it was not Biden’s record, according to the Navy.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service immediately began an investigation after they were alerted about the search and the probe concluded on April 24, according to the Navy.

The sailor was administratively punished and continues to serve in the Navy, the U.S. official said.

“The MHS Genesis system is a secure health system and at no time was the President’s personal information compromised,” Navy Commander Tim Hawkins told CBS News.

The president was informed about the sailor’s attempts to access his medical records within hours of White House staff being notified about the attempted breach by the Defense Department, a White House official told CBS News. This official would not say when the White House learned about the attempted breach.

While the sailor was part of the Navy Medicine Readiness and Training Command based at Fort Belvoir, the president’s annual physicals and any emergency medical care is provided at the Walter Reed National Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., just outside Washington.

The president underwent his annual physical at Walter Reed on Feb. 28, two days after the Navy’s criminal investigation began.

But the White House official said the president’s physical “was previously planned and was not impacted by this incident.”
