A tragic accident occurred in the state of New York on Friday.

A tractor-trailer plowed into a New York State trooper’s patrol car, resulting in the officer being severely injured.

The impact of the semi-truck destroyed the patrol car and sent it flying over a guardrail.

A New York State trooper was seriously injured when a semi-truck plowed into his parked patrol car on the side of a busy upstate highway – obliterating the cruiser and sending the cop flying over a guardrail, police said.

The freakish incident unfolded around 12:39 p.m. Friday as the trooper was conducting a traffic stop on the New York State Thruway in Schenectady County, just 25 miles southwest of Albany.

The trailer-less tractor was traveling westbound on Interstate 90 when it slammed into the squad car, according to state police, which shared startling images of the collision.

Police said the impact hurled the trooper, who was standing on the passenger side of a Honda Odyssey involved in the traffic stop, over the metal barrier and tumbling down an embankment.

“The incident is a powerful reminder: New York’s Move Over Law is not optional,” police said, referring to a state law that requires motorists to slow down and shift lanes when a vehicle is stopped on an Empire State roadway.

A State Police trooper who suffered serious injuries after their cruiser was hit by a passing semi-truck on Friday has been released from the hospital, State Police say.

The trooper was released from the hospital on Friday night and is back home, State Police spokesman Beau Duffy said. The trooper was hospitalized earlier that day after suffering “serious but not life-threatening injuries,” officials said.

The trooper’s vehicle was hit by a passing semi-truck on the Thruway while the trooper was conducting a traffic stop on a Honda Odyssey minivan at 12:39 p.m. Friday, State Police said.

The force of the crash threw the trooper over the guardrail and down an embankment, police said. Paramedics brought the trooper to Albany Medical Center. The driver and passenger of the Honda were transported to St. Mary’s Hospital in Amsterdam with minor injuries. Their conditions were unclear Saturday.

“We are incredibly grateful that reported injuries are not more serious than they are,” New York State Troopers PBA President Charles Murphy said in a statement Friday. “It is imperative that when any vehicle — be it a State Police cruiser, a DOT truck or a passenger car — is pulled to the side of the road, other motorists drive with caution and move over to protect those on the shoulder, who deserve to make it home safely.”
