Over 7,000 U.S. Troops Will Bunk In D.C. Federal Government Buildings In June

Over 7,000 military members will be housed in government office buildings next month.

The troops will be housed in government buildings as they arrive in Washington, D.C., to participate in a massive military parade planned to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary.

The parade, which also coincides with President Trump’s birthday, will consist of tanks, planes, and other military equipment.

Trump is expected to view the parade from Constitution  Avenue near the White House.

Per The Hill:

More than 7,000 soldiers will reportedly be housed in government office buildings for a major military parade next month to mark the Army’s 250th anniversary.

The parade, which will also fall on President Trump’s birthday, is expected to feature tanks, military planes and other equipment on the National Mall, according to planning documents obtained by USA Today. The total cost of the parade will be roughly $30 million, but may increase.

USA Today reported that soldiers and equipment are expected to arrive in Washington in the days leading up to the June 14 parade. The news outlet reported that there will be 120 military vehicles in town for the event, including 24 Abrams tanks and howitzer cannons.

Trump is expected to observe the parade from a viewing stand along Constitution Avenue near the White House. The parade will conclude with fireworks at dusk, USA Today reported.

An Army official previously confirmed to The Hill that the parade will stretch almost 4 miles, from the Pentagon in Arlington, Va., to the White House.

Democrats and critics have questioned both the cost of the parade and whether it politicizes the military, which has traditionally been nonpartisan. The fact that the parade falls on Trump’s birthday has only fueled criticism from Democrats who view it as a way for the president to celebrate himself.

Per USA Today:

The big military parade planned for June 14 – the Army’s 250th anniversary and President Donald Trump’s 79th birthday – will feature dozens of tanks rumbling through the streets of Washington, warplanes buzzing overhead and 7,500 soldiers housed in government office buildings downtown, according to Army planning documents.

USA TODAY had an exclusive look at the latest planning documents that detail the elaborate choreography required for a massive military parade and unofficial birthday party with few, if any, precedents. On June 8, 1991, thousands of troops along with tanks and other armored vehicles, paraded through Washington. That was to honor their victory in the Gulf War. Then-President George H.W. Bush’s birthday was four days later.

Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and John Kennedy had thousands of troops at their inaugurations. Eisenhower’s boasted tanks and jeeps and warplanes.

The military, an institution with a loyalty to the Constitution and no political party, is balancing new political challenges this time. Is the parade a celebration of the Army’s storied heritage, or an homage to Trump and the political movement he leads? Or both? Army officials say that they have long planned a major celebration for their milestone anniversary.
