On Thursday, President Trump announced Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as his nomination for Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary.
“I am thrilled to announce Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as The United States Secretary of Health and Human Services (HHS). For too long, Americans have been crushed by the industrial food complex and drug companies who have engaged in deception, misinformation, and disinformation when it comes to Public Health,” Trump said.
“The Safety and Health of all Americans is the most important role of any Administration, and HHS will play a big role in helping ensure that everybody will be protected from harmful chemicals, pollutants, pesticides, pharmaceutical products, and food additives that have contributed to the overwhelming Health Crisis in this Country,” he continued.
“Mr. Kennedy will restore these Agencies to the traditions of Gold Standard Scientific Research, and beacons of Transparency, to end the Chronic Disease epidemic, and to Make America Great and Healthy Again!” he added.

“Thank you @realDonaldTrump for your leadership and courage. I’m committed to advancing your vision to Make America Healthy Again. We have a generational opportunity to bring together the greatest minds in science, medicine, industry, and government to put an end to the chronic disease epidemic,” RFK Jr. said.
“I look forward to working with the more than 80,000 employees at HHS to free the agencies from the smothering cloud of corporate capture so they can pursue their mission to make Americans once again the healthiest people on Earth. Together we will clean up corruption, stop the revolving door between industry and government, and return our health agencies to their rich tradition of gold-standard, evidence-based science,” he continued.
“I will provide Americans with transparency and access to all the data so they can make informed choices for themselves and their families. My commitment to the American people is to be an honest public servant. Let’s go!” he added.

From the Associated Press:
Kennedy hails from one of the nation’s most storied political families and is the son of the late Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and the nephew of President John F. Kennedy. He first challenged President Joe Biden for the Democratic nomination last year. He then ran as an independent but abandoned his bid this summer after striking a deal to endorse Trump in exchange for a promise to serve in a health policy role during a second Trump administration.
He and the president-elect have since become good friends. The two campaigned together extensively during the race’s final stretch, and Trump made clear he intended to give Kennedy a major public health role.
“I’m going to let him go wild on health,” Trump said at a rally last month.
During the campaign, Kennedy told NewsNation that Trump had asked him to “reorganize” agencies including the CDC, the National Institutes of Health and the Food and Drug Administration.
Kennedy has pushed against processed foods and the use of herbicides like Roundup weed killer. He has long criticized the large commercial farms and animal feeding operations that dominate the industry.
But he is perhaps best known for his criticism of childhood vaccines.
“During the COVID-19 pandemic, Kennedy rose to prominence as a leading critic of pandemic policies, including lockdowns, experimental vaccines and mandates. As a result, the Biden administration specifically targeted Kennedy for censorship. In April 2023, Kennedy took leave from CHD to run for president as a Democrat. He later switched gears to run as an independent. In August, Kennedy suspended his campaign and endorsed former President Donald Trump,” Children’s Health Defense, which RFK Jr. founded, stated.
“After endorsing Trump, Kennedy and his team launched the Make American Healthy Again campaign. He vowed to do whatever it takes to get toxic chemicals out of our food, our soil, our water and our air. If confirmed, Kennedy would hold the most powerful governmental position in public health. HHS oversees many public health agencies, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health,” it continued.
“Kennedy has indicated that the Trump administration would make key changes to public health policy, including recommending an end to water fluoridation. Scientists at HHS and at many major research institutions have found that water fluoridation poses a risk to children’s neurodevelopment. He has also committed, if given a role in the Trump administration, to take up the issue of vaccine safety. Kennedy has said that within two years he will be able to make America healthy again by addressing chronic disease, addiction, toxic processed foods and unsafe medications,” it added.

Per CBS News:
Kennedy would need to be confirmed by the Senate. His odds of clearing a Senate led by Democrats would have been low, given his long record of what the party called “anti-science, fringe public health stances,” but with Republicans in the majority come January, Trump’s nominees will have an easier path to confirmation.
Despite the expected opposition to Kennedy’s nomination — along with other controversial choices to lead national security agencies and former Florida Rep. Matt Gaetz to lead the Justice Department — Trump has told associates in recent days he is standing by his pick for health chief.
“No one can talk him out of it,” one of the sources familiar with the pick said Thursday.
