President Trump Threatens To Cut NYC Funding If ‘Lunatic’ Mamdani Doesn’t ‘Do The Right Thing’

In the wake of far-left New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s Democratic primary win, speculation has abounded regarding what could become of the nation’s most populous city if a full-on socialist wins the general election.

And President Donald Trump hasn’t shied away from his criticism of Mamdani’s extreme views.

He sat down for a Fox News interview this weekend in which he issued a clear warning to the Big Apple should its voters choose to elect the radical candidate to replace current Democratic Mayor Eric Adams.

The Daily Caller provided a relevant portion of Trump’s interview with Maria Bartiromo:

“He’s a communist. I think it’s very bad for New York. I don’t know that he’s going to get in his inconceivable that he’s but he’s a communist and he’s a pure communist,” Trump said. “But let’s say this, if he does get in, I’m going to be president and he’s going to have to do the right thing or they’re not getting any money. He’s got to do the right thing.”

Trump reacted in disbelief over Mamdani’s rise in New York City’s mayoral race and said that he once believed the country would never elect a socialist.

“It’s shocking that I would have assumed that. I used to say we will never have a socialist in this country. No, but we’ll have a communist. I mean, he’s a communist and going to be mayor of New York. So I was very surprised when I said I never heard of him, I don’t know who he is,” Trump said.

Host Maria Bartiromo then informed Trump that Mamdani stated he would have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested if he visited New York.

“Oh, he’s a radical left lunatic,” Trump replied.

The presidential reprimand received significant social media support:

It’s not just Republicans and moderates who are voicing their concerns about Mamdani, as Fox News reported:

Matt Bennett, executive vice president for the moderate Democrat-aligned group the Third Way, acknowledged that Mamdani “focused on affordability,” which he said is “great.”

Bennett added Mamdani is “young, charismatic, a great communicator. All that is great. We want to see that.”

But Bennett told Fox News “the problem is he has the wrong prescription.”

On the primary campaign trail, Mamdani proposed eliminating fares to ride New York City’s vast bus system, making City University of New York “tuition-free,” freezing rents on municipal housing, offering “free childcare” for children up to age 5 and setting up government-run grocery stores.

And in a CNN interview Thursday night, he said, “I have many critiques of capitalism. … There must be a better distribution of wealth for all of God’s children in this country.”

Bennett noted that “Republicans are already weaponizing” Mamdani’s primary victory to take aim “against other Democrats.”
