While “The View” co-host Sunny Hostin initially expressed serious misgivings about Pope Leo XIV due to his biblical stance on issues like marriage, she has come around on the recently appointed pontiff due to one detail about his ethnic heritage.
When she found out that he’s technically not just another White pope, she suddenly found the Chicago native much more acceptable.
According to the Daily Wire:
“As it turns out, our new American pope has Haitian and black roots! So, we actually have a black pope! Apparently — it’s like a chef’s kiss for me — so apparently both of his maternal grandparents are described as black, Haitian, or mulatto in several census documents. And on their marriage license, his birth — the grandfather’s birthplace is Haiti, listed as Haiti, her birthplace is listed as born in New Orleans. They were identified as people of color, but in 1920 when they migrated to Chicago, the census reflected their race as white.”
“So I’m loving everything about this new pope,” cohost Ana Navarro interjected.
ADVERTISEMENT“So, I’m loving it. I’m really enjoying it,” Hostin agreed. “And it’s good to have a black pope!”
The modern left has moved far away from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s call for people to be judged by the content of their character rather than the color of their skin.
But plenty of critics were quick to call out Hostin’s myopic view of the new pope:
Oh man, for a hot second I thought this was a Babylon Bee headline!

So she only likes someone based on the color of their skin which is racist!

Here’s how the New York Post covered Hostin’s remarks:
After Pope Leo was announced on Thursday, Hostin said she was “concerned” about the LGBTQ community based on a statement he made in 2012 as a bishop where he described how pop culture had fostered “sympathy for beliefs and practices that are at odds with the gospel,” including the “homosexual lifestyle” and “alternative families comprised of same-sex partners and their adopted children.”
Hostin on Monday said she was more encouraged by Pope Leo based on comments from 2023 which she thought showed he had completely changed his position.
“He said, you know, he believes what Pope Francis believed is that a church is a church for everyone. The church is very inclusive. So, I’m liking this guy a lot! I’m loving the pope,” Hostin said.
And a clip of the segment is included below:
After denouncing him last week, The View’s race baiter, Sunny Hostin does a 180-flip-flop on Pope Leo once she found out of his black ancestry:
