Republicans Closer To Securing House After Seat Flips Red

Republicans inched closer to securing a trifecta after Gabe Evans, an Army veteran and former police officer, unseated Democratic incumbent Rep. Yadira Caraveo (D-CO) in Colorado’s competitive 8th Congressional District.

“Evans was leading Caraveo with 49% of the vote to her 48% at 3:15 p.m. on Sunday when Caraveo conceded. They were separated by about 2,500 votes,” The Colorado Sun reports.

“It’s been the honor of a lifetime to serve the people of Colorado’s 8th District,” Caraveo said, according to the outlet.

“While this isn’t the outcome we had hoped for, the work is not over. I look forward to returning to Washington to finish out this term,” she added.

From The Colorado Sun:

Evans said in a written statement that he was incredibly humbled.

“It is an honor to be entrusted with the job of representing you and your families, and I am ready to fight back for a better direction for all Coloradans,” Evans said, thanking Caraveo for her service.

The victory by Evans, an Army veteran and former police officer, dislodges the first Latina elected to Congress from Colorado. Evans is Hispanic, too.

The win will improve Republicans’ chances of keeping control of the U.S. House and securing unified control over the federal government. The GOP has already won control of the U.S. Senate and Republican Donald Trump will be president.

According to the Associated Press, Republicans lead Democrats 214-203 in the race to control the House of Representatives.

218 is needed to secure the majority.

Per CBS News:

Evans said he’d hold a news conference on Monday to say more about the race.

He won his primary in June with 77.5% of the vote. Caraveo is finishing up her first term in the new congressional district, which includes Greeley, Fort Lupton, Thornton and other areas just north of Denver.

Evans is a Colorado state representative and former police officer, while Caraveo is Colorado’s first Latina member of Congress.

Around 4:30 p.m. Sunday, Caraveo had 159,426 votes to Evans’ 162,022.
