Democrats, mainstream media personalities, and even some GOP leaders are predicting the worst as market fallout continues in response to President Donald Trump’s tariff announcements.
In reality, however, defenders of Trump’s trade policy say its America-first mission is already paying dividends.
During a recent Fox News town hall event, Sen. John Kennedy (R-LA) laid out the case for tariffs, though he admitted that the future is anything but certain.
As the Daily Caller reported:
“Other countries have used trade barriers to take advantage of the American people and American businesses. Number two, President Trump has said ‘Enough,’” Kennedy added. “We would not be in this situation today had he not been a Pitbull. By that, I mean there are 195 countries in the world, and 70 are begging him to make a deal to lower tariffs.”
Following his announcement of a baseline 10% tariff against the list of countries, the president said that certain countries, like China, would be hit with higher tariffs based on their own tariffs against the U.S. One day later, Republican Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley and Democrat Washington Sen. Maria Cantwell introduced a bipartisan bill to restrict Trump’s ability to impose tariffs without congressional approval.
“He’s like the Pitbull, though, who caught the car,” Kennedy said. “I don’t know what the president’s going to do next … I hope he takes a deal. I hope he and Scott Bessent go to every one of those countries and reduce those tariffs and trade barriers down to zero and let American businesses compete with those foreign businesses. Competition makes us better.”
Reports have poured out of the White House in recent days that dozens of nations have responded to tariffs with a desire to negotiate:
Stop listening to these morons on TV, they’ve been wrong about everything. Trump’s tariffs are working, nations are coming to the table to negotiate… We are the largest economy in the world, it’s about time we acted like it.

Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent also shared a recent update, per The Hill:
Bessent stressed that the decision to signal publicly a willingness to engage in negotiations was Trump’s alone and that it followed an influx of calls from countries rushing to the negotiating table.
“I can tell you, it’s all President Trump’s decision,” Bessent said. “And he had a view on, after liberation day, that we should go into quiet mode and let our partners think about the kind of the shock and awe that he presented.”
Bessent said, since April 2, when Trump announced his sweeping global tariffs that sent the market into a tailspin, “up to” 70 countries have already contacted the White House “for how to come and negotiate.”
“So, I would say that the negotiations are the result of the massive inflow of inbound calls to come and negotiate,” Bessent added. “It had nothing to do with the market.”
Here’s a recent clip of Trump making the case for tariffs in his own words:
