A Florida sheriff confirmed he would cooperate with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) after receiving a warning from Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier.
Uthmeier sent Broward Sheriff Gregory Tony a letter demanding his cooperation with the federal agency after the sheriff reportedly said immigration enforcement is not one of their “top priorities.”

WSVN reports:
The letter came after Tony made some comments during a June 3 budget workshop meeting that were perceived as showing a lack of motivation to help with immigration enforcement across the county.
During the meeting, Tony said “The patch on our sleeve says Broward County. We are not ICE, we are not immigration. I don’t work for the Department of Justice. I don’t work for the president of the United States,” when asked how he viewed his role when it came to enforcing immigration law.
The state’s top cop, James Uthmeier, noted those comments and others made by Tony.
ADVERTISEMENTHis letter stated in part: “You stated that the Broward County Sheriff’s Office has “other priorities in this community” and that “immigration is not one of them…a state or local law enforcement agency “shall use best efforts to support the enforcement of federal immigration law’ when acting within the scope of his or her employment.”
Uthmeier went on to say that he wants Tony to “clarify your remarks to affirm that your policy and intention is to fulfill your obligations.”
While Tony did make those comments, he also reiterated his tough stance on crime in the community, including those committed by immigrants.

Per Florida’s Voice:
In a letter to Uthmeier on Monday, Tony said the department has entered into the 287(g) Task Force Mode with ICE, which “authorizes trained and credentialed law enforcement deputies to assist ICE with federal immigration enforcement upon request.”
He emphasized BSO “has been complying, and will continue to comply, with our obligations under these agreements.”
Tony described BSO as a “leader” in the efforts addressing crimes committed by unauthorized aliens, calling to a department priority.
He pointed to recent efforts, including a press conference he hosted with U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, where officials announced the arrest of nine MS-13 gang members “responsible for multiple murders” in Broward County.
He pledged to continue to targeting criminal activity involving illegal aliens and reaffirmed his office’s commitment to following Florida’s immigration laws.
