A Nebraska teenager faces accusations of causing a train derailment to film the event.
“The 17-year-old boy is facing two counts of criminal mischief $5,000+ in Lancaster County court. The charges were filed on Wednesday,” KOLN reports.
The derailment involved a BNSF train on April 21st in Bennet, Nebraska.
“On July 8, the BNSF investigator obtained a search warrant to seize a cell phone and a 4K digital recorder belonging to the 17-year-old male as it was believed to contain evidence of the teen committing the crime,” Fox Nebraska stated.
KOLN reports:
On April 21, a BNSF train came off the rails at the railroad crossing near Monroe and Juniper streets at 6:10 p.m. Two locomotives and five fully loaded railcars came off the rails but remained upright as they collided with an empty rail car.
A 17-year-old boy and train enthusiast was at the scene, filming the derailment, according to court documents. He shared the video with 10/11 News following the derailment.
An investigator with the BNSF Railway Police spoke to the train’s conductor after the derailment. He told authorities that he spotted a switch which had been misaligned, leading the rail from an eastbound route onto an industry track.
The conductor tried to make an emergency stop but didn’t have enough time before the train reached the switch location, leading to a derailment and collision with an empty coal car.
The 17-year-old allegedly posted a video of the train derailment and called it the “most insane video I’ve ever taken!”
The derailment reportedly caused approximately $350,000 in total damages.
An investigator said footage of the derailment was later posted to a YouTube account believed to be associated with the teen, according to Fox Nebraska.

Per Fox Nebraska:
The conductor told the investigator he initiated an emergency stop but was unable to stop before going through the switch location, causing the train to derail. The investigator said they later observed a switch lock was missing, indicating the switch was tampered with.
While on scene, the affidavit said, 17-year-old male showed up on scene asking questions about the derailment. The investigator said the teen also said he recorded video of the derailment on his cell phone.
On April 24, the BNSF investigator said he obtained security footage from the nearby Frontier Coop, which he said showed a beige 1996 Buick Park Avenue traveling in the area, before the 17-year-old male was seen walking on the south side of the tracks toward the switch.
The affidavit said the teen was later seen walking back to his vehicle.
The BNSF investigator said the teen was later seen driving the Buick southbound on Monroe Street before he parked the vehicle, got out and set up a tripod.
The affidavit said the derailment occurred a few minutes later and the teen then walked to the parking lot of Frontier Coop to film the train.
“In May, investigators matched the vehicle seen in the surveillance footage with the boy’s Park Avenue, court records show,” KOLN noted.
