[WATCH] Matt Gaetz Addresses If He Will Return To Congress In First Interview Since Withdrawing From Attorney General Role

In his first interview since withdrawing his name from consideration to serve as President Trump’s Attorney General, Matt Gaetz reiterated he has no plans to return to Congress.

“What is next for Matt Gaetz?” Charlie Kirk asked.

“I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz responded.

“Eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress,” he added.

According to Daily Mail, Gaetz said he fell victim to a smear campaign that rehashed ‘old and discredited allegations.’

“If the things [in] the House Ethics report were true, I would be under indictment and probably in a prison cell,” he told Charlie Kirk, according to the outlet.

“But of course, they’re false, because when you test them against other records, when you test them against other testimony, it all falls apart very quickly,” he added.

Daily Mail reports:

He said he was the victim of a politically motivated campaign because of his key role in forcing out Kevin McCarthy as House Speaker.

And he insisted he could have answered all the allegations during his confirmation hearings but that the process would have dragged on, undermining Trump’s plans to begin his overhaul of government on day one.

The interview will be released at midday Friday.

He also said that his replacement, former Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi, would be ‘phenomenal’ in the role.

And he has no plans to return to Congress.

Instead he said he would now work to recruit the talent that would help underpin the Trump administration.

Per Axios:

Gaetz resigned his House seat last week, just hours after Trump announced he was nominating the controversial Floridian as his top law enforcement officer.

It emerged shortly thereafter that Gaetz’s resignation came just days before the Ethics Committee was set to meet and determine its next steps in its investigation of him.

Several House Democrats have tried to force a House vote on releasing the report as senators said they would like to review its contents while considering Gaetz’s nomination.

After Gaetz withdrew his nomination Thursday, speculation abounded on Capitol Hill about whether he would try to be seated in the 119th Congress.

In his letter resigning his term in the 118th Congress, Gaetz said he did “not intend” to be seated in the next session on Jan. 3, 2025.
