Whether it’s a serious policy position or a clever negotiating tactic, President Donald Trump has attracted significant attention with his talk about turning Canada into America’s 51st state.
Even some of his supporters, however, have expressed concern about the political influence Canada’s largely left-leaning electorate would have on the rest of the U.S.
During a recent Oval Office press conference, Trump took a question on the topic from Fox News Channel correspondent Peter Doocy.
As the Daily Caller reported:
“You say this in all the talk about Canada becoming the 51st state, they would be a very, very blue state. Very, very big, and very, very blue,” Doocy said.
“Yeah, it might be, but you know, you have that artificial line that looks like it was drawn by a ruler. I don’t mean a ruler like a king, I mean a ruler like a ruler,” Trump said. “This way, and it’s just an artificial line that was drawn in the sand, or in the ice. You add that to this country, what a beautiful landmass, the most beautiful landmass anywhere in the world. And it was just cut off for whatever reason, it would be great,” Trump began.
“Now, is it liberal? Maybe, but a conservative [Pierre Poilievre], until I got involved, I don’t care who wins up there, frankly, I’d probably do better with the liberal than the conservative to tell you the truth, but just a little while ago, before I got involved and totally changed the election which I don’t care about, probably it’s to our advantage actually. But the conservative was leading against who I call Governor [Justin] Trudeau. The conservative was leading by 35 points, so I don’t know about that,” the president continued.
Here’s a sampling of the mixed reviews Trump’s stated plans for Canada have received:

TODAY: Thousands came together in Toronto, standing united against the threat of US tariffs and calls to make Canada the 51st state.
But the message from Canadians is clear – Canada is strong, resilient and independent!

As the New York Post reported, podcaster Joe Rogan recently shared which country he thinks would make a better addition to the United States:
“We have to become friends with Canada again. This is so ridiculous,” the world’s most popular podcaster said, adding, “This is the dumbest f–king feud.”
The UFC host added he thought it would “be fun” if Canada became the 51st star on Old Glory — though another piece of land, high on longitudinal lines, does tickle his fancy.
“I think Greenland is more accessible. Could probably buy that. If we want a 51st state, it’s Greenland,” Rogan told Kosta.
“Plus, if global warming is real, because of all the digging and oil and all that s–t, you know, would be good to have a cold spot to eventually warm up,” he joked.
Of course, the president has also shared a similar take on Greenland:
