If there are any Americans who get their knowledge of American politics primarily from sources like ABC’s “The View,” one wonders what they must think is going on inside the White House.
On most days, the all-female panel is allowed to spew any sort of vitriol aimed at President Donald Trump and his supporters.
But during Friday’s episode, one false claim from co-host Sunny Hostin was so egregiously incorrect that even fellow panelist Alyssa Farah Griffin couldn’t resist calling it out.
The Daily Caller reported on the exchange:
“Trump lied to people. I think he lied to his base,” Hostin said. “I think he told his base that their overtime would not be taxed, that was a lie.”
ADVERTISEMENT“Actually, that’s in the new tax bill. It’s literally in the tax bill in Congress,” Griffin pushed back.
Hostin then claimed that congressional Republicans “had to fight” to include that policy in the bill, which Griffin then corrected her on.
“That’s not true. [Trump] ran on no tax on tips and it’s in the tax bill,” Griffin said.
“Yeah, but it wasn’t in it originally,” Hostin said.
“[The bill is] being drafted right now,” Griffin pointed out.
Trump’s proposal about cutting taxes on tips and overtime has been among his most popular thus far, so his leftist critics might have an incentive to mislead the American people on the topic:
I’m glad this is happening for the sake of those younger than me. But I sure wish I could have the money back I paid in overtime taxes when I was younger and working 70 hrs a week. While my wife worked 50 -60 hrs.

Even Politico acknowledged that Trump was able to get his tax priorities into the bill currently being considered on Capitol Hill:
President Donald Trump won more than he lost in the House GOP’s newly unveiled tax legislation, though some of his priorities were slimmed down and his bid to raise taxes on some financial heavyweights wasn’t included.
The bill — which the House tax-writing committee will take up Tuesday — not only delivers on his promise to make a slew of his expiring 2017 tax cuts permanent, but also includes tax relief for tips, seniors and overtime work. Trump also got his request to give taxpayers a deduction for the interest they pay on auto loans, and to limit deductions for the purchase of sports teams.

The bill leaves a placeholder to at least triple the state and local tax deduction, after Trump promised blue-state Republicans during the presidential campaign that he would “get SALT back,” a break prized by their constituents that is now capped at $10,000. The exact contours are still up for discussion, though, Speaker Mike Johnson said.
