X Formally Allows Pornographic Content?

X, formerly known as Twitter, has altered its rules to allow users to post adult, consensual pornographic content.

“You may share consensually produced and distributed adult nudity or sexual behavior, provided it's properly labeled and not prominently displayed,” the platform's 'Adult Content' policies section reads.

The section was updated in May 2024.

“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, whether visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression. We believe in the autonomy of adults to engage with and create content that reflects their own beliefs, desires, and experiences, including those related to sexuality. We balance this freedom by restricting exposure to Adult Content for children or adult users who choose not to see it. We also prohibit content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors. We also do not allow sharing Adult Content in highly visible places such as profile photos or banners,” the section read.

X’s violent content rules also have similar guidelines, but X maintains that the content should not be “excessively gory or depicting sexual violence.” The platform continues to disallow content that explicitly threatens or incites/glorifies violence.

The company’s reasoning for allowing graphic content is to let people participate in conversations about what is happening around them, and include images and videos.

The social network allows users to mark their posts as containing sensitive media and doesn’t allow users under 18 or those who haven’t entered their birth dates on their profile to see such posts.

X has never really banned porn, but these clauses could let it build services around adult content — think creating an OnlyFans competitor to bolster its revenues.

About 13% of posts on the platform in 2022 contained adult content, according to a Reuters report in 2022 that cited internal company documents. Adult content on X has seemingly gone up since then, especially as porn bots have proliferated on the platform.

Now that the social network is formally allowing adult content, regulators will no doubt be keeping a keen eye on X and its efforts to weed out non-consensual porn and child sexual abuse material (CSAM).

“X requires people using the service to be 13 years of age or older. If you signed up for an account before you were 13 years old, and now meet our minimum age requirement, you can regain access to your account by removing some data,” the platform's 'About account restoration' page reads.

X added, “This also applies to AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime.”

Users can report pornographic images and videos that are not properly marked as adult content.

The move could make X a formal competitor to OnlyFans, with the new paid features including subscriptions and ad revenue sharing.

The platform also has a massive problem with porn bots replying to people's tweets with graphic images.

Adult Content is any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal. This also applies to AI-generated, photographic or animated content such as cartoons, hentai, or anime. Examples include depictions of:

  • full or partial nudity, including close-ups of genitals, buttocks, or breasts;
  • explicit or implied sexual behavior or simulated acts such as sexual intercourse and other sexual acts.

    If you regularly post adult content on X, we ask that you please adjust your media settings. Doing so places all your images and videos behind a content warning that needs to be acknowledged before your media can be viewed. You can also add a one-time content warning on individual posts. If you continue to fail marking your posts, we will adjust your account settings for you.

    Users under 18 or viewers who do not include a birth date on their profile cannot click to view marked content. Learn more about age restricted content here.

    You may begin to see new media content warnings on posts that X has designated as containing Adult Content (instead of a generic sensitive media label). When these new content warnings are available for you to use, please be sure to continue marking your media accordingly.
