Zelenskyy Actually Wore A Suit For His NATO Meeting With President Trump. Here’s How It Went.

After his embarrassing display during a White House visit earlier this year, Ukranian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy sought a do-over with President Donald Trump at this week’s NATO summit.

One notable difference in the latest meeting was Zelenskyy’s appearance.

As Reuters pointed out, the Ukrainian president showed up looking far more formal than usual:

Although he was not invited to the meeting itself, he met with Trump afterwards, with an agenda including a wish-list of arms purchases.

The subtle switch, stopping short of a white shirt or tie, has captured attention on social media and from the Ukrainian edition of ELLE magazine, which on Wednesday described his changed look as “visual diplomacy of a new kind”.

The negative focus on Zelenskiy’s attire at the White House was widely criticised by Ukrainians, who have largely rallied around their leader since Moscow’s February 2022 invasion.

His style choice drew some attention online:

Zelenskyy’s involvement in the NATO meeting, despite Ukraine’s exclusion from the organization, was also a common topic of discussion on social media:

As for what the two world leaders discussed during their meeting, Zelenskyy offered a summary:

I had a good meeting with @POTUS in The Hague.

I congratulated President Trump on the successful operation in the Middle East. It is important that the U.S. actions have weakened not only their nuclear program but also their drone production capabilities. We will continue to keep an eye on the situation.

We discussed the protection of our people with the President — first and foremost, the purchase of American air defense systems to shield our cities, our people, churches, and infrastructure. Ukraine is ready to buy this equipment and support American weapons manufacturers. Europe can help. We also discussed the potential for co-production of drones. We can strengthen each other.

I also informed the President about how the technical team’s meetings in Istanbul went, as well as the exchanges of prisoners and the fallen. Russia handed over the bodies of its own troops. Forensic examinations are currently being carried out in Kyiv to identify their relatives.

We talked about the situation on the battlefield. Putin is definitely not winning. I presented the President with the facts about what is really happening on the ground.

Thank you for the meeting and your support. I’m also grateful for the truly kind words about our people. We will keep working.

Here’s what Trump had to say, per The Hill:

“No, no, I just — I wanted to know how he’s doing,” Trump told a reporter. “It was very nice, actually. We had a little rough times. He couldn’t have been nicer. I think he’d like to see an end to this, I do.

“I think, what I took from the meeting — couldn’t have been nicer, actually — but I took from the meeting that he’d like to see it end. I think it’s a great time to end it.”

Trump said he’d call Russian President Vladimir Putin to try to facilitate an end to the war, which began when Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022.
