On the 80th anniversary of the D-Day landings in Normandy, Hillary Clinton took to social media to liken a vote for President Joe Biden in the upcoming November elections to the heroic effort to liberate France from the Nazis.
"Eighty years ago today, thousands of brave Americans fought to protect democracy on the shores of Normandy. This November, all we have to do is vote," Clinton said Thursday morning in a post on X.
More than 4,000 Allied troops were killed on D-Day, including 2,500 Americans. The June 6, 1944, invasion marked the beginning of the Allied mission to break Nazi Germany's grip on Europe.
One D-Day veteran described the scene of the aftermath of the invasion as "one of the most disgusting things I’ve seen in my life. … Bodies without arms and legs, bodies without heads—war is hell."
The 80th anniversary commemoration of D-Day is likely the final significant celebration for veterans who took part in the historic military invasion. Most surviving participants are around 100 years old.
Clinton has on multiple occasions described former president Donald Trump as an authoritarian on par with Nazi dictator Adolf Hitler, comparing opposition to the Republican to the fight against the Nazis.
In February, the former first lady and failed presidential candidate said, "Trump will do everything he can to become an absolute authoritarian leader if given the opportunity to do so."
Appearing on The View in November, Clinton said, "Hitler was duly elected. All of a sudden somebody with those tendencies, dictatorial, authoritarian tendencies, would be like ‘OK we’re gonna shut this down, we’re gonna throw these people in jail.’ And they didn’t usually telegraph that. Trump is telling us what he intends to do."
