What's happening: Pat Sajak is retiring this week as host of Wheel of Fortune, the beloved game show he has helmed since 1981. His final episode will air June 7.
Why it matters: Sajak is 77 years old. His decision to call it quits after hosting the same show for 43 years—a Guinness World Record—stands in stark contrast to President Joe Biden's controversial decision to seek reelection at the age of 81.
By the numbers: Biden has served in the federal government since 1973, when he was just 30 years old. He was a U.S. senator for 36 years (1973-2009), vice president for 8 years (2009-2017), and has served as president since January 2021.
• Biden has been a politician for more than 47 years, even longer than Sajak has hosted Wheel of Fortune. The median age in the United States is roughly 40 years, which means that Biden has been in politics longer than most Americans have been alive.
• But instead of retiring with dignity, Biden is seeking another four-year term as president. If he lives long enough to win reelection and serve a full second term, Biden will be 86 years old by the time he leaves office and will have served in the federal government for more than 52 years.
Crucial context: Sajak has a 29-year-old daughter named Maggie. Unlike Hunter Biden, the 54-year-old son of the president sometimes referred to as "Sleepy Joe," she is not currently on trial for lying about drug use on an application to purchase a firearm.
"I don't and won't comment on pending federal cases," Joe Biden said on Monday as Hunter's trial got underway. Alas, that isn't true. During a May 2023 appearance on MSNBC, the president insisted that Hunter "has done nothing wrong." His remarks were denounced as highly inappropriate at the time.
Bottom line: Biden should be relaxing on a beach in Delaware. It's a shame he picked Kamala Harris as his vice president.
