it seems likely that the Senate passes Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill” today.
As far as I can understand it, this bill is basically a death sentence for our collective future in the U.S. It takes 15 million people off health insurance, demolishes the clean energy industry, removes meaningful protection against AI predation, amps up surveillance and massively increases funding to ICE, which is currently terrorizing communities across the U.S.
When combined with the Supreme Court decision on Friday, which means that federal judges can no longer stop Trump’s Executive Orders on a national level, it feels like we are rapidly moving toward a totalitarian state.
While we experience this happening in real time, it still seems like the vast majority of American “citizens” (commercial subjects? Mind-controlled products?) are basically dazed, disconnected, detached, and unaware.
Also, our avenues for protesting or opposing what is happening to our country seem utterly insufficient to the magnitude of the destruction underway.
We are told by our sweet-tempered liberal pundits to write our congressperson, or we can stand outside in a tightly managed peaceful protest every month or two, waving some useless sign at phalanxes of glowering cops.
If we were living in France, tens of millions of us would be building barricades in the streets right now and burning shit down. Instead, we are mostly placid, waiting for something. I suppose the assumption is that, if we were to undertake a ferocious collective protest, we would be met with a far more brutal reprisal.
Trump and his Fascist coterie would actually enjoy smashing us up. What we need instead is something like a general strike or a movement that removes our economic activity from the system. It seems the only meaningful protest against this regime is economic noncompliance, as we saw with the surprisingly effective Tesla protests. I find it stomach-turning — if unsurprising — that the Stock Market has shot back up.
Even as Trump’s cognitive abilities rapidly decline, much of the U.S. is still in a full-throttle cult of personality, with no off ramp in sight.
