Joint research into the use of high-powered microwaves in defense equipment will be conducted by Japan and the United States as the two countries are set to reach an agreement, according to the American Military News.

The Defense Ministry's Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency, along with other pertinent agencies in both countries, aims to acquire the ability to neutralize drones that enter their respective territories. For context: an electromagnetic wave that is frequently used in microwave ovens is called a microwave. A drone's internal electronic components may malfunction if it is exposed to microwave radiation.

The Defense Ministry anticipates that microwave-powered weapons would be a game-changing innovation that could alter the balance of military capabilities. Microwaves are anticipated to be more effective against attacks involving a large number of small drones due to their ability to cover a broader area at a lower cost than ammunition and missiles. Autonomous drones that do not necessitate radio control may also employ microwaves.

The collaborative research is expected to last for approximately three years. The Acquisition, Technology, and Logistics Agency expects that the effort will result in the development of new equipment.
