"I have watched the CCTV footage of the attack more than once, it's sickening to watch."
The entire incident, which took place in February of last year, was captured by CCTV. The footage was released on Thursday by the Metropolitan Police with permission from the victim, whose identity has been concealed.
The identities of the perpetrators were released to the public Thursday as well at their sentencing. Summer Betts-Ramsey, who was 19 at the time, was the ringleader behind the attack, the Daily Mail reports. In the CCTV footage, she can be seen with four other assailants all dressed in hoodies and masks dancing around and waiting for the victim to arrive in a parking lot behind the Harrow Leisure Center. The mob pounced on the victim upon arrival and began beating the victim with "great excitement."
Betts-Ramsey kicked the victim in the head at least seven times before pulling out a knife and stabbing the victim in the nose, thigh, hand and buttocks. The mob beat the victim with roller skates and boots from the center before fleeing with the victim's handbag. The victim survived after a bystander intervened to stop the attack and called an ambulance.
Betts-Ramsey, who was arrested in her home the day after the attack, was sentenced alongside 18-year-olds Bradley Harris, Camron Osei and Shiloh Hindedas, and a 17-year-old boy, who cannot be named, after all admitted causing grievous bodily harm with intent.
"I have watched the CCTV footage of the attack more than once, it's sickening to watch," Judge Philip Katz, KC, said as the perpetrators were locked up on Thursday. He added that Betts-Ramsey's "gloating in the aftermath of the attack was shamelessly hateful and dehumanizing." She will serve at least four-and-half years in a young offender's institution, with an extended sentence of four years on license after she was deemed a "dangerous offender."
Harris, Hindes and Osei will serve three years in a young offender's institution while the unnamed 17-year-old will complete 18 months in a youth rehabilitation program and will be forced to wear an ankle monitor for three months.
The sexual encounter happened with Harris, who secretly recorded the act on a FaceTime call. A friend then called him informing him that the victim was transgender. Harris held the victim at knifepoint until the victim made the admission to him. He plotted a revenge attack and recruited Betts-Ramsey to lead it.
Judge Katz said: "The victim was viciously assaulted by five young persons each intending for her to be caused really serious injury. She was kicked and punched to the ground, they then continued to punch her, and she was stabbed repeatedly. At the time of the attack she presented no threat to anyone, she did nothing to provoke the attack or to justify it in any way - unknown to [the victim] this was a planned and premeditated attack. Kicking and stamping on someone when they are defenseless on the ground is abhorrent, consistently we hear in these courts about attacks of this nature which have led to death."
The judge was asked to take into account peer pressure but said "I struggle to see any" as he believed the attack was carried out "with general excitement." He continued: "I have watched the CCTV footage of the attack more than once, it's sickening to watch. Her gloating in the aftermath of the attack was shamelessly hateful and dehumanising. People acting in groups often perform acts they would not do alone."
