Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky shared that he spoke with President-elect Donald Trump following his recent election victory, congratulating him on a successful campaign.

“I had an excellent call with [President Trump] and congratulated him on his historic landslide victory—his tremendous campaign made this result possible. I praised his family and team for their great work,” Zelensky shared in a post on X.

Zelensky then noted that he and Trump agreed to maintain a “close dialogue,” stating that “strong and unwavering U.S. leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace.”

The Ukrainian leader went on to say that he admires Trump's “commitment to the ‘peace through strength’ approach in global affairs.” He also reminded Trump of the “great meeting” the two had back in September where they spoke about  “ways to put an end to Russian aggression against Ukraine.”

It remains to be seen how Trump’s overwhelming victory in the recent election will affect the current state of the Ukranian-Russian conflict. Throughout his campaign, Trump expressed skepticism over continued aid to Ukraine and vowed to end the conflict within 24 hours of taking office. This commitment comes despite Zelensky consistently asserting that his country will not concede any territorial compromises to Russia and must continue fighting, The Washington Post reported.

The recent electoral victory of Trump has also prompted the Biden administration to attempt to expedite the delivery of $6 billion in remaining allocated aid to Ukraine before the inauguration, fearing that Trump may halt support once in office.
