American woman killed during protest in the West Bank

An American woman was killed during a protest against settlements in the West Bank on Friday, resulting in the U.S. calling for Israel to investigate.

According to a witness, 26-year-old Aysenur Ezgi Eygi was killed by Israeli soldiers, the Associated Press reports.

The White House released a statement, saying they were "deeply disturbed" by Eygi's death and requested Israel investigate what happened.

The Israel Defense Forces said that it was looking into reports that troops killed a foreign national while shooting at an instigator who was initiating violence at the protest.

Eygi was a Turkish and U.S. citizen from Seattle, Washington.

Two doctors confirmed that she was shot in the head. A witness said he saw her “lying on the ground, next to an olive tree, bleeding to death.”

“A claim that a foreign citizen was killed by gunfire is being probed. The details of the incident and the circumstances of her being struck are under investigation,” the IDF said in a statement.
