Biden declares support for son Hunter as his federal gun trial begins

In a statement Monday, President Joe Biden declared his "love and support" for his son as he appeared in a Delaware court to face the first of two federal trials.

"I am the President, but I am also a Dad. Jill and I love our son, and we are so proud of the man he is today," President Biden said, according to NBC News. "Hunter’s resilience in the face of adversity and the strength he has brought to his recovery are inspiring to us. A lot of families have loved ones who have overcome addiction and know what we mean."

"As the President, I don’t and won’t comment on pending federal cases, but as a Dad, I have boundless love for my son, confidence in him, and respect for his strength. Our family has been through a lot together, and Jill and I are going to continue to be there for Hunter and our family with our love and support," he added.

The younger Biden has been charged in Delaware with three felony crimes linked to 2018 firearm purchase while he was using drugs. The accusations include lying to the licensed gun dealer, making a false claim on the application used to screen firearm's buyers by saying he was not a drug user, and illegally possessing the firearm for 11 days.

Hunter has acknowledged that he was using drugs at the time.

President Biden repeatedly insisted during the 2020 presidential campaign and afterwards that his son "has done nothing wrong."
