President Biden says his comments Tuesday night about remarks made at a Trump rally this past weekend regarding Puerto Rico being garbage were directed at a "supporter" – presumably a comic – not all Trump supporters.
"Earlier today I referred to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico spewed by Trump's supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage – which is the only word I can think of to describe it," Biden said about the comment he made on a virtual call at about the same time Democratic presidential nominee Vice President Kamala Harris was holding a major campaign rally on the Ellipse, outside of the White House, in Washington, D.C.
In his X post, Biden also wrote: "His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable. That's all I meant to say. ... The comments at that rally don't reflect who we are as a nation."
During the virtual call, Biden also said GOP presidential nominee Donald Trump has "no character" and he "doesn't give a damn about the Latino community."
Biden seems to say "supporters" in the a videotape of the call: "Just the other day, a speaker at his rally called Puerto Rico a floating island of garbage," he said. "The only garbage I see floating out there is his" supporter or supporters. "His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable and it is un-American."
