California’s larger power provider, Pacific Gas & Electric Co., is cutting electricity to residents amid dangerous conditions from the arriving heat wave.

The company said the first round of shutoffs impacted about 2,000 customers across eight counties — Butte, Colusa, Lake, Napa, Solano, Sonoma, Tehama and Yolo "due to high winds and dry conditions."

Another 10,000 shutoffs are planned, the company said.

The shutoffs are aimed at helping prevent the power company's equipment from causing fires during dangerous dry conditions.

According to the National Weather Service, the Sacramento Valley and Bay Area mountains are currently under a red flag excessive heat warning.
