Freedom Caucus's Andy Ogles faces tight primary challenge

Rep. Andy Ogles, R-Tenn., faces a tight primary challenge in his race with his opponent enjoying a discernable cash advantage.

Running against him is Nashville Metro Council member Courtney Johnston, who reportedly had $500,000 in her war chest in July to Ogles's $95,000, according to Punchbowl News.

The Tennessee congressman also reportedly hopes to chair the House Freedom Caucus.

Ogles told the outlet that there is grassroots polling he has seen that shows his campaign is doing well despite the cash disparity.

We’re taking nothing for granted,” he told the outlet. “We’re being outspent but we’re working harder. We’ve got the grassroots and our polling looks good. You never take your foot off the gas.”

The Tennessee Republican has come under scrutiny for allegedly misusing campaign finances and reportedly exaggerating parts of his resume.

Johnston has accused Ogles of being a "do nothing" member of Congress.

Recently, Rep. Bob Good, R-Va., who chaired the Freedom Caucus, was ousted in his primary in a tight race against John McGuire.

Ogles's primary is Aug. 1.
