Funk music star Sly Stone dies at the age of 82


Funk music icon Sly Stone, the former frontman of the famed 1960s group "Sly and the Family Stone," died on Monday in Los Angeles at the age of 82. 

The musician, known for being a pioneer in multiple styles including rock and pop, died peacefully after a prolonged battle with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), his family said in a statement

“Sly was a monumental figure, a groundbreaking innovator, and a true pioneer who redefined the landscape of pop, funk, and rock music,” the statement reads. "While we mourn his absence, we take solace in knowing that his extraordinary musical legacy will continue to resonate and inspire for generations to come."

He was surrounded by his three children, extended family, and his best friend.

The funk musician is known for hits such as “Dance to the Music,” “I Want to Take You Higher,” and "Family Affair."

Stone's career, which spanned decades, influenced major artists including Stevie Wonder, Prince, Michael Jackson, Outkast, Red Hot Chili Peppers and D’Angelo, per the New York Times
