GOP Rep. Bergman tops list of biggest spenders under House reimbursement program: Report

Rep. Jack Bergman, R-Mich., topped the list of biggest spenders under a House reimbursement program that doesn't require a receipt, according to an analysis from The Washington Post.

According to their report, qualified expenses under the program apply to food and lodging in lawmakers' home districts and Washington, D.C.

The reimbursements do not require receipts. In 2023, about $5.2 million was paid out under the program, which the House created last year.

In total, 153 Democrats and 166 Republicans received reimbursements last year.

Bergman's total was $32,000 in lodging and close to $12,000 for meals

Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., came in second with $30,000 for lodging and $10,000 for meals.

Reps. Nancy Mace, R-S.C., and Eric Swalwell, D-Calif., requested above average amounts for reimbursements, the Post's analysis found.

Swalwell's office told The Hill that there is nothing "average" about having two children living in expensive areas. Mace's office said she follows the rules for her reimbursements under the program.
