Grassley releases bodycam footage of local police responding to Trump shooting


Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley on Tuesday released bodycam footage from local law enforcement officers that showed the police and Secret Service response to the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump.

Trump was injured in a shooting last week at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. Two attendees were also injured, and one was killed. The gunman was also killed by a Secret Service sniper.

Grassley's office said the surveillance footage confirms that local law enforcement officers saw the shooter before he was on the roof where he fired the shots, that police shared pictures of the shooter with the Secret Service, and that law enforcement officials lost sight of the shooter before the shooting.

“For the past 10 days, questions have only been building regarding the catastrophic security failure that occurred on July 13. Federal agencies, particularly the Secret Service, have failed to be transparent with the American people," the senator said in a statement shared with Just The News. "This assassination attempt is a matter of substantial public interest, and the public’s business ought to be public. I’m releasing these records as part of my efforts to get answers and hold agencies accountable.”

Grassley's office said the footage was provided by the Beaver County Emergency Services Unit upon requests from Congress.

The senator also sent a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and  Acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe, requesting the Secret Service operational security plan for the July 13 rally. The letter additionally contained documentation of a Butler County site plan and that a Secret Service drone operator was on the personnel list for the event. 

Grassley urged the Secret Service and Department of Homeland Security to respond to the new letter by July 30.
